Mirroring the film’s quirky approach to storytelling,
Vincent and Francois also took on some unusual
briefs while painting the signs. These included
working on a wall while standing in a cold river
wearing protective fishing gear, and painting
another wall in pouring rain at night. Although they
reported to the graphic design team, they would
also occasionally come on set with Wes Anderson
to make small modifications before shooting.
To coincide with the film’s release in 2021, there
was an exhibition of props and set design work
in London. Although Vincent and Francois got to
keep a few small items, most of the work at street
level has now been removed. However, at least
one piece does survive from the jail scenes in
the film—on the building that houses the actual
Angoulême jail! Reflecting on the experience, the
pair recall long days (and nights). But ultimately
it was “absolutely amazing, especially as a first
experience working in cinema. We have loads of
funny and tough memories!” The project has also
led to two more film projects, and possibly a new
specialist niche for the duo.
